Ægishjálmur (Old Norwegian: helmet of fear/helm of terror) is an old magic symbol that induces fear in enemies and protects against negative powers. If a Viking had this on his person, be that in the form of jewelry or as a tattoo, he knew that he was protected from anything life threw at him. It is mentioned in ancient sagas, such as in the Völsunga saga, where the dragon Fafnir wears one between his eyes. Scenes from the Völsunga saga are depicted on a runic stone in Swedish Uppland, dated around the year 1000.
