Drinking horns weren't just for functional use, they were a status symbol - most ordinary people in those times would use a wooden bowl or cup. The highest of status symbols came from Aurochs which are a now extinct type of wild ox. Those horns could be massive and hold several litres of drink - they were also often decorated with gold and/or silver.
